Topic: Whina Cooper Contexts: Community, Environmental  Areas: Information and Communication
Year 4-8 Level Two and Three
Situation: after an extensive study on Dame Whina Cooper, we wish to present our new found knowledge to other syndicates
Design Brief: prepare and share a presentation which includes information, facts and some opinions about Dame Whina Cooper
Specifications: Computer group
- information must include graphics, text and photos
- use encyclopaedia CD roms, internet, and scanner
- must be in SlideShow format

Video group
- must have an interview
- must have facts
-  must be filmed in different locations
- must have a simulation
- write a script

Technological Knowledge and Understanding
Objective: Level 2:2b identify and depict ideas about components of technological systems
                   Level 3:2b explore and describe how components are linked in a technological system

Learning Experiences:

1. read books about NZ and NZers
2. label a map of her travels
3. research aspects of her life - identify key actions and ideas
4. plot the route from Whina's home village to Napier
5. draw a timeline depicting main events in Dame Whina Cooper's life

Objective: Level 2:6b identify and gather necessary resources, and model or make their preferred solution
                   Level 3:6b prepare a plan of action, identify and collect the necessary resources and produce the selected solution to meet agreed or specified criteria
Learning Experiences:

1. choose an aspect or aspects of Dame Whina Cooper's life that you would life to cover for a presentation
2. select and collect appropriate resources and material
3. plan presentation by storyboarding
4. work together designing presentation
5. present the slideshow or video to an audience

Technology and Society
Objective: Level 2:8 explore and compare the roles of some examples of technology in daily life in their own and another time and place
                   Level 3:8 describe and identify the positive and negative effects of some instances of technologies on people's lives and the environment

1. research and write your own Whakapapa
2. read stories about Gumdiggers in NZ and comment on how technologies have changed
3. identify the common technologies used at the beginning of Dame Whina Cooper's life and compare with todays technologies 

Assessment
Objective L.3:6b prepare a plan of action and collect the necessary resources and produce the selected solution to meet agreed or specified criteria Assessment Task:
in the presentation to the class include storyboarding, which should include references to all resources used, present the slideshow or video to an audience
