Topic: Seeds Contexts: School, Personal,  Home Areas: Materials, Structures
Year 2 Level One
Resources: boxes, containers, plastic, seeds raising mix/potting mix, wax, pumice or pebbles, seeds, cutting materials, local nursery, keen gardeners in the local community
Situation: we have been given seeds following our nursery visit but we have no containers to grow them in
Design Brief: design a container you can use to grow your seeds
Specifications: - you may use recycled or environmental materials to design a container big enough to grow up to 6 seeds
- it must be portable
Technological Knowledge and Understanding
Objective: Level 1:3 share ideas about how a particular group of people carry out technological activities
Learning Experiences:

1. visit a nursery and observe what they use to grow their seeds in, types of containers etc
2. identify how they set up containers
3. discuss soil types and suitability
4. discuss advantages and disadvantages of different containers
5. investigate what other sort of containers are available and identify what they are used for

Technological Capability
Objective: Level 1:6d describe and discuss how they feel about what they have accomplished
Learning Experiences:

1. look at a wide range of recycled and other materials and select materials for design
2. plan and design a container keeping in mind how the materials can be modified for use
3. test and evaluate model
4.identify and record why you have chosen this idea, how do you feel about it etc

Technology and Society
Objective: Level 1:share their reasons for their choice of technological activity

1. discuss how plants can be used to improve environments
2. describe how their final solution was the best for their seeds
3. identify and discuss why there is such a difference in prices in seeds and sizes of plants
4. ask questions of keen gardeners

Assessment
