Topic: Plastic Bags Contexts: Personal, School,  Areas: materials, 
Year 5-6 Level Two
Situation: Our room goes swimming everyday. Most people carry their swimming togs and towel in a plastic bag. They have to go past several rooms that are working quietly. No matter how quiet they are their plastic bags make a dreadful noise
Design Brief: make something that will carry your swimming togs, towel and any other items you might need
Specifications: students write their own specifications
Technological Knowledge and Understanding
Objective: Level 2.2b identify and depict ideas about components of technological systems displayed in bags
Learning Experiences:

1. examine and explore a variety of bags
2. visit a bag factory or a shop
3. collect pictures of variety of bags and identify good and not so good points about them
4. invite a speaker to talk about how they make bags
5. test and evaluate what type of raw materials could be used in their design (flax, fabric etc)

Technological Capability
Objective: Level 2:6a discuss possible solutions and strategies, and select and develop a suitable option
Learning Experiences:

1. discuss, design and develop a solution to their problem
2. develop a mockup made out of paper
3. test their solution
4. make final product
5. test and evaluate
6. assess the viability of their product

Technology and Society
Objective: Level 2:8 explore and compare the roles of plastic bags in our culture
Learning Experiences:

1. investigate and evaluate the impact plastic bags have made in our lives and on the environment worldwide
2. survey adults to find out what people used before plastic bags
3. discuss in groups and make a short presentation to the class on the topic of 'A world without Plastic Bags'
