Topic: Life Cycle Contexts: Environmental,  School Areas: Materials, Structures & Mechanisms
Year 1-2 Level One
Situation: our caterpillars are devouring the swan plants in our school and there is not enough food for them
Design Brief: create a solution to the overcrowding problem we have with the caterpillars
Specifications: - somewhere for chrysalis to form
- provide other food sources
- caterpillars have to survive
- use resources provided (string, wool, environmental materials etc)
Technological Knowledge and Understanding
Objective: Level 1:2b
Learning Experiences:

1. observe a life cycle, identify type of environment, food and predators that impact on monarch butterflies
2. discuss and share observations
3. read books about life cycles, share information with partners
4. present a diagram illustrating a life cycle
5. investigate types of food caterpillars can eat
6.  identify what is a suitable environment for caterpillars and chrysalis's to survive in
7. look at resources available in school for creating a suitable environment

Technological Capability
Objective: Level 2:6b identify and gather necessary resources, and model or make their preferred solution
Learning Experiences:

1. prepare a plan of action
2. collect resources and make mockup
3. test and evaluate individual events
4. setup event for school Olympic day

Technology and Society
Objective: Level 2:8 explore and compare the roles of some example of technology in daily life in their own and in another place such as adventure playgrounds
Learning Experiences:

1.chart your groups favourite Olympic sports
2. survey friends and families about favourite Olympic sports
3. list all the participating countries, identify their placement on a map
4. observe and describe how winners and losers react
5. identify safety measures used in traditional Olympic events and make comparisons to safety measures employed in school sports equipment and adventure playground equipment

Assessment
Objective L.2:8
explore and compare the roles of some example of technology in daily life in their own and in another place such as adventure playgrounds
Assessment Task:
able to identify safety measures used in traditional Olympic events and make comparisons to safety measures employed in school sports equipment and adventure playground equipment
Achieving at Level 3
describe and identify the positive and negative effects of some instances of technologies on people lives and environments
Achieving at Level 2
explore and compare the roles of some example of technology in daily life in their own and in another place such as adventure playgrounds
Achieving at Level 1
share their ideas about the ways in which familiar technologies affect their lives, such as adventure playgrounds
Objective L2:6b
identify and gather necessary resources and model or make their preferred solution
Assessment Task:
able to collect all resources, present a plan of intended solution and make model
Achieving at Level 3
prepare a plan of action, identify and collect the required resources and produce the selected solution to meet agreed or specified criteria
Achieving at Level 2
identify and gather necessary resources and model or make their preferred solution
Achieving at Level 1
