Topic: Designing invitations Contexts: Personal, Home, school Areas: ICT, Materials
Year 3-4 Level One- two
Resources: selection of invitations for different events, access to computers, paper of different colours and textures, environmental material, string, glue, wax, ribbon etc
Situation: Our school has many special events that we invite people to. The office staff has previously sent out the invitations but would like the children in the school to have more of a say in how the invitations look and best represent the school,
Design Brief: Investigating what makes our school extraordinary and using that information, design invitations that can be used for school special events.
Specifications: - must reflect the special character of the school
- must be readable and easy to post
- must be an original design
- must be able to be mass produced easily
Technological Knowledge and Understanding
Objective: Level 2:2a identify & discuss ideas about modifications & adaptations in invitations
Learning Experiences:
Examine and compare many different styles of invitations
Identify what occasions they best suit and what are common features
Make suggestions of how to modify certain invitations to fit the needs of a different occasion
Investigate what special events are coming up in this years calendar and identify how this could possibly affect the design
look carefully at all the resources that are available to you and work out what you would possibly work with
Technological Capability
Objective: Level 2:6c show and describe examples of their intentions, progress, and outcomes to others
Learning Experiences:
Identify what materials are going to be used and the way that they are going to be used (draw a plan identifying all the materials and dimensions)
Share progress and outcomes with rest of class
Make necessary changes to product
use the invitations as planned and ask for feedback

Objective: Level 2:8, explore & compare the roles of invitations in daily life in their own & another time or place
survey others in the school to find out what makes our school special
identify specific characteristics that could be used in an invitation
find out where invitations originated from, who sent the first one and why
investigate what attracts people and makes them take notice of specific designs
discuss how invitations have changed over the years
compare invitations from now and in the past. Identify commonalities and account for the differences
