Technology Units
Junior and Senior

Topic: Forces, push and pull Contexts: School,  Recreational Areas: Materials, Structures and Mechanisms
Year 1-6 Level One and Two
Situation: we are having a school airport extravaganza day celebrating flight
Design Brief: design and make a model that can be entered into any 2 of the 6 events
Specifications: - size, dimensions of a shoe box
- must have gone through vigorous testing before flight day
- no changes can be made on flight day
Technological Knowledge and Understanding
Objective: Level 1:1 ask questions and offer ideas about the use and operation of everyday technology
Objective: Level 2:1 explore and discuss the use and operation of technology in everyday use
Learning Experiences:

1. investigate different means of flight (model planes, birds, insects, planes)
2. trip to Auckland Airport identifying differences in planes, observing the principals of thrust, lift etc
3. explore and classify how flight is used to help people
4. experiment with different materials the principles of flight i.e. wing shapes, record findings

Technological Capability
Objective: Level 1:6b identify and gather necessary resources and model or make their preferred solution
Objective: Level 2:6b identify and gather necessary resources and model or make their preferred solution
Learning Experiences:

1. develop and modify a plan based on an experiment with wing shapes
2. make mockup of plane
3. test and evaluate referring to design brief, specifications and plan
4. make adapted model, test thoroughly before airport day

Technology and Society
Objective: Level 1:8 share ideas about the ways in which familiar technologies affect their lives
Objective: Level 2:8 explore and compare the roles of some e.g. of technology in daily life in their own and another time and place
Learning Experiences:

1. investigate how planes have impacted on our lives i.e. migration, transport, recreation
2. discover how people moved vast distances in the past
3. describe and identify positives and negative effects of aeroplanes in our society

Extravaganza Day Events
largest distance travelled
acrobatics
longest time spent in the air
fastest jet plane
accuracy to bulls eye
planes over the high jump

Assessment
Objective L:2.1
explore and discuss the use and operation of technologies in everyday use
Assessment Task:
investigate how flight is used to help people in everyday life. Present information as an advertisement
Achieving at Level 3
investigate and describe the use and operation of technologies in an everyday setting
Achieving at Level 2
explore and discuss the use and operation of technologies in everyday use
