Topic: Fitness Trail Contexts: School,  Recreational, Community, Environment Areas: Materials,  Structures and Mechanisms
Year 5-8 Level  Three
Situation: Year 5-8 children do not have anything challenging to do in their spare time e.g. morning tea and  lunchtime
Design Brief: using existing materials, design a fun, challenging fitness trail
Specifications: - must use equipment in school
- must include at least 8 challenges
- safety and OSH requirements must be adhered to
- must challenge students fitness
- strict dimensions are to be met
Technological Knowledge and Understanding

Objective: Level 3:2a compare significant features of some technologies such as safety features
Learning Experiences:

1. investigate other fitness trails at nearby schools
2. explore and find existing equipment in school
3. invite OSH to speak about health and safety requirements, identify potential safety issues and record information
5. ask questions of other schools of what safety procedures they needed to put in place
4. draw diagrams of how fitness trails are put together, note any similarities
5. explore physical restrictions
6. investigate costs involved in materials, construction and labour
7. interview Principal and Board of Trustees to find out restrictions and any other guidelines
8. identify differences and similarities between a fitness trail and an adventure playground

Technological Capability

Objective: Level 3:6a explore possible solutions and strategies, and select appropriate options justifying their decisions

Learning Experiences:

1. plan a fitness trail. It will need to include materials, dimensions and costs
2. present information to the BOT, Management and students, invite feedback
3. make a scaled model of preferred solution
4. include a rationale in plan for "why we made it in this way'
5. brainstorm ideas for modifications, adaptation or innovation

Technology and Society

Objective: Level 3:7 identify and consider different views and feelings of people in relation to some specific technological developments or effects
Learning Experiences:

1. survey other children as to what they would like to see in a Fitness trail
2. survey teachers and parents to their expectations of what the Fitness trail should include

Assessment
Objective L. 3:2a compare significant features of some technologies such as safety features Assessment
describe, discuss and evaluate how they feel about what they have accomplished
Level 4
identify underlying technological principles
Level 3
