Topic: Volcanoes Contexts: School, Environmental, Energy Areas:  Information and Communication Technology
Year 4-8 Level Two
Situation: We have many dormant and active volcanoes in New Zealand. In 1996 Mt Ruapehu started erupting
Design Brief: prepare a presentation that will inform others about Volcanoes in NZ
Specifications: Computer group
- must be in slideshow format
- information must include graphics, text and photos
- use CD rom, internet, and scanner
- must have facts
Static Visual Group
include 
diagrams, headings, borders, text, graphs, pictures from at least 3 different sources (scanner, photocopier, camera, computer, etc)
Video group
- use a video camera
- must have an interview
- must have facts
- must be filmed in various locations
- must have a volcanic simulation
Technological Knowledge and Understanding
Objective: Level 2:4 identify and discuss ways in which specific technology is communicated and promoted, such as newspapers
1.investigate how a volcano erupts
2. read newspapers clippings
3. go to the NZ herald archive site and read Ruapehu articles, use the search function  http://www.nzherald.co.nz 
3. record information gathered in a database
4. demonstrate the use and operation of visual tools (video camera, computer etc)
Technological Capability
Objective: Level 2:6c show and describe examples of their intentions, progress and outcomes to others
Learning Experiences:

1.select appropriate material for presentation
2. plan a presentation
3. develop a presentation
4. collate and analyse database findings
5. present their findings in a form of a seminar

Technology and Society
Objective: Level 2:8 explore and compare the roles of reporting news in daily life in their own and another time and place
Learning Experiences:

1. compare the different methods of presenting information
2. compare how we communicate today to the early 1800s in New Zealand
3. discuss the effects of visual presentations and how they make an impact on society
4. investigate eruptions in the last 150 years in New Zealand with the focus on how it affected the people involved
