Learning Outcomes: understand that a time capsule is used to show important information or things from a particular time so that people in the future will know what happened in your time; decide what items best represent and tell people about the school; decide what type of capsule will last over time

Situation/Setting the Scene:

Time capsules are used to document important information from a particular year or time so that future generations have records of their past. What will people who are living several years from now want to know about the years that you were at school?

Design Brief:

You are going to design a prototype time capsule and the items that will need to go into it for future pupils and teachers of the school to open in so many years time

Specifications:

bullet Allocate a time for it to be opened in your life time
bullet Choose items that are relevant to your time and your life and will give people an idea in the future what life was like for you
bullet Make suggestions for a capsule that will last the distance

Technological Knowledge

Assess

Technological Products

Understand that materials can be formed, manipulated and or transformed to enhance the fitness for purpose of a technological product.

Learning Experiences: (examine, identify, discuss, collect, observe, compare, read, describe)

Investigate different sources finding out what time capsules have been prepared before and what sort of items were put in there. Create a diagrammatic map using Inspiration

Discuss what you have found out about what makes a suitable Time Capsule. Identify what components you will need to have to create your Time Capsule (Inspiration activity Prototype Time Capsule)

You have read and heard about many different time capsules, what things do you think would be best to put into a time capsule for future generations to learn about us? Time Capsule Inspiration diagram

Remember that it is best to choose things that you know and like, keeping in mind that what you choose will tell the next generations about you and life today.  What do you think others should remember or learn about?

Technological Practice

Assess

Outcome Development and evaluation

Undertake research to develop ideas for feasible outcomes. Undertake trialling and evaluation that takes account of stakeholder feedback in order to select and develop the outcome that best addresses the key attributes.

Learning Experiences:(generate, select, develop, adapt, present, test & evaluate,
       draw, model, plan)

bullet Investigate materials and decide what sort of container you could turn into a time capsule, decide where is the best place to store it
bullet draw a prototype plan of what the time capsule could look like, put together a proposal for the creation of it and present to the Teaching staff
bullet organise the making of the capsule, collect all items
bullet seal your school time capsule and organise a ceremony for the storage of it

Nature of Technology

Characteristics of technological outcomes

Understand that technological outcomes can be interpreted in terms of how they might be used and by whom and that each has a proper function as well as possible alternative functions

Learning Experiences: (impacts, cultural values, attitudes, behaviour, preferences, beliefs & values)

bullet explain to parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles and other children what a timecapsule is
bullet ask these same people if they could choose 5 items what would they choose and why?
bullet Record their answers and look for similarities, make a group statement about the most commonest item and speculate as to why that was chosen
