Year 2-3 Level One
Resources: local supermarket/4 Square/Dairy
books, empty packages and containers, plastic money, shopping receipts, junk mail, visiting speaker from the supermarket, clipboards, pictures, shelves and cupboards
Situation: there is an extra space in the classroom that can be used for a choosing activity using money
Design Brief: create a shop environment where you can learn to use money
Specifications: - use empty packages and containers
- use existing materials and furniture available
- each area must be able to be kept tidy
- must look like a real shop
Technological Knowledge and Understanding
Objective: Level 1:1 ask questions and offer ideas about the use and operation of everyday technologies
Learning Experiences:

1. read books on shopping and supermarkets i.e Greedy Cat, Rosie goes shopping
2. visit a shop/supermarket - observe the layout of different areas, identify storage systems, record layout and systems
3. Observe a checkout operator, what does she/he say and do when serving a customer
4. invite a speaker from a supermarket, prepare questions

Technological Capability
Objective: Level 1:6b identify and gather necessary resources and model or make their preferred solution
Learning Experiences:

1. collect empty packages and containers
2. record stockstaking of products in each grocery area
3. create posters and price tags
4. teams plan the storage of a particular grocery item
5. design or adapt a shelving system
6. produce receipts

Technology and Society
Objective: Level 1:8 share ideas about the ways in which familiar technologies affect their lives

1. write rules for using the shops
2. interview parents/caregivers on the reasons for choosing to shop at certain places
3. go shopping with a parent and observe how shops are set up
4. discuss specials and how this can influence buying
