Situation/Setting the Scene:

We are looking at insect life cycles and would like to look at them more closely.

Design Brief:

Design an environment to observe a variety of insects

Specification:

Time limit of one week
Must have sufficient height for insects to move around
Must have easy access to replace plant material

Technological Knowledge and Understanding

1    2a    2b

3    4

Assess

Identify components that make up a humane environment for your insect and its needs

(Mindmap Insect Environment Kidspiration)

Learning Experiences: (examine, identify, discuss, collect, observe, compare, read, describe)

·          KWL chart (KWL Chart Insects in folder)of what we know and what we want to learn about insects

·          Research what insects are suitable for captivity http://www.bugcontainers.com/bugsinclass.doc (this site talks about the things you need)

1.        Identify the insect and make a list of its needs (food, water, shelter, etc.)

2.        Show how the needs will be met.

3.        Pay particular attention to the food that will be provided.  If it is a predator, will it eat beetles and/or crickets?  If it eats plant material, can this food be obtained easily?

·          Identify components that make up a humane environment for your insect and its needs (Mindmap Insect Environment Kidspiration in folder)

Technological Capability

5    6a    6b

6c    6d

Assess

Draw a plan of the design

Gather materials and resources together

Produce the insect house Insect Environment Plan in folder

Learning Experiences: (generate, select, develop, adapt, present, test & evaluate, draw, model, plan)

·          Share ideas about how to care for a particular insect

·          Draw a plan of the design

·          Gather materials and resources together (Insect Environment Plan in folder)

·          Produce the insect house

·          Collect food sources and insects

Technology and Society

7    8

Assess

Learning Experiences: (impacts, cultural values, attitudes, behaviour, preferences, beliefs & values)

·          Compare different environments of insects in captivity

·          List how many ways you can make the environment more adaptable to the insects needs

·          Consider how an environment impacts on how we live
