Assess

Learning Experiences: (examine, identify, discuss, collect, observe, compare, read, describe)
Introduction to Unit

Photograph ‘Belonging Here’ picture with digital camera. Make a series of photos starting with a very small part (use the zoom feature of the camera) of the picture; gradually disclose more of the picture with several other photos. Put this together in PowerPoint. Introduce to whole syndicate in the Auditorium. Children can discuss what they think the picture is all about

bullet Ask the question ‘Why does food need to be preserved’
bullet Examine foods and packaging, create a display with examples of preserved food and fill in Prediction and Evidence Inspiration chart (Adjustment column will be filled in at the end of the investigation) The prediction will be about how the food was preserved, (methods, ingredients) and what evidence do they have to support this claim

Assess

Learning Experiences: (generate, select, develop, adapt, present, test & evaluate, draw, model, plan)

bullet Think of a scenario where you need to preserve food for a long period of time
bullet Write a design brief and specifications for this scenario
bullet

Present your scenario, brief, specifications and your potential solution of what you will need to organize and prepare to the class. Use a variety of communication methods

Technology and Society

7

Assess

Learning Experiences: (impacts, cultural values, attitudes, behaviour, preferences, beliefs & values)

bullet Compare traditional and contemporary methods of preservation eg. Drying and dehydration. Make a table that illustrates the variations of methods used and types of food products. Record what impacts recent development of technologies have had on the preservation of food.
