Resources: Butterfly creek (butterflycreek.co.nz), enchantedlearning.com, monarchwatch.org, Swan plants, journal stories, books

Situation/Setting the Scene: Caterpillars eat swan plants too quickly.

Design Brief:

Design a system that will manage the caterpillars so that they do not exhaust their food supply.

Specification:

·          Must provide an alternative food source

bullet Support the entire life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly

Technological Knowledge and Understanding

Assess

Identify and question other food sources that the butterflies can use

Learning Experiences: (examine, identify, discuss, collect, observe, compare, read, describe)

·          Create and maintain a class log recording all stages

·          Investigate the natural environment of the butterfly

·          Observe, describe and discuss how monarch butterflies consume all the leaves on the Swan Plant

·          Identify other insects that eat Swan Plants

·          Identify and question other food sources that the butterflies can use

·          Monarchs will feed from dishes containing teflon scrubbers and artificial nectar. The teflon scrubbers are available in a variety of colours and the nectar can be easily prepared. The challenge is to design an experiment using the feeders and nectar to show one or more of the following:

1. Whether Monarchs have a colour preference.
2. Whether Monarchs prefer nectar with a specific sugar concentration.
3.Whether Monarchs can "remember" or learn a colour, nectar type or dish location

Technological Capability

Assess

in groups student plan and develop their strategies for maintaining swan plant growth (draw a plan using Butterfly Assessment sheet)

Learning Experiences: (generate, select, develop, adapt, present, test & evaluate, draw, model, plan)

·          share findings and discuss ways of preserving monarch caterpillars

·          in groups student plan and develop their strategies for maintaining swan plant growth (draw a plan using Butterfly Assessment sheet)

·          evaluate and test strategies and plan. Identify some areas that need to be adapted, altered and retested

·          each group share their successes and failures and how they felt about what they have accomplished

Technology and Society

7    8

Assess

Learning Experiences: (impacts, cultural values, attitudes, behaviour, preferences, beliefs & values)

·          discuss their reasons for their method of feeding the butterflies

·          brainstorm what it would mean if we had no butterflies

·          discuss why we need to help the monarch butterfly to survive
