Topic: Water (boats) Contexts: School,  Recreational Areas: Materials, ICT, Structures and Mechanisms
Year 1-6 Level One, Two, Three
Situation: the America's cup is being  held in Auckland. We would like to hold our own regatta using the school swimming pool
Design Brief: in teams design and build a sailing vessel that can be used in a race
Specifications: - use materials provided
- must have a logo, flag and promotional material
- keep within size restrictions
Technological Knowledge and Understanding
Objective: Level 1:4 share ideas about some ways in which familiar technological developments are communicated
Objective: Level 2:4 identify  and discuss ways in which a specific technology is communicated and promoted
Objective: Level 3:4 identify and compare the ways particular technological developments are communicated and promoted to specific groups
Learning Experiences:

1. collect information about the America's cup, identify significant facts about the different contenders
2. experiment with different materials for floating and sinking, record findings
3. investigate what makes up a  team, organise a team of your own
4. read, classify and record what promotional means are used for promoting each team
5. discuss and decide on team name, mascots and other promotional ideas

Objective: Level 1:6d describe and discuss how they feel about what they are accomplished 
Objective: Level 2:6d describe how satisfied they are with their progress and outcomes, and how well they are achieving the intended solution

1. present a plan of model vessel
2. make mock-up of vessel
3. test and evaluate, 
4. make prototype, test thoroughly
5. describe, discuss and evaluate how they feel about what they have accomplished

Objective: Level 2:7 identify different views about a specific technological development within the local community
Objective: Level 3:7 identify and consider different views and feelings of people in relation to some specific technological developments or effects
Learning Experiences:

1.discuss what is national pride, give examples of how national pride is demonstrated
2. present to class the reasons why your team have made this particular sailing vessel
3. discuss what is competitiveness and sportsmanship, find examples in NZ history
4. survey family and friends and investigate what are their favourite sports team and why
