Topic: Puppets Contexts: School, Recreational Areas: Materials, Information and Communication Technology
Year 2-3 Level One
Resources TINZC, plays from journals, library books on Puppets, notes on Puppet making from Internet, puppets for display, variety of material that could be used to make puppets from e.g. socks, tubes, materials, boxes, sticks
Situation: We like to do story telling in our class and we would like to use puppets
Design Brief: create puppets that are suitable to use in story telling and plays
Specifications: - Needs to work well
- Needs to be robust
- Needs interesting features
- Has to suit the play or story it is to be used for
Technological Knowledge and Understanding
Objective: Level 1:2a ask questions and share ideas about modifications in puppets
Learning Experiences:

1. look at display of puppets, prepare a chart that identifies modifications in the different puppets. Prepare questions that need to be further investigated
2. read plays and stories, watch TV programmes that have used puppets
3. decide which story or play they would like to make puppets for
4. identify what makes a good puppet, look at how it has been put together, what materials have been used and what purpose it is to be used for
5. make simple drawings of different puppets and label the parts
6. identify what puppets are hand, marionette, shadow and marotte
7.
look at materials available and evaluate which would be the best material to use for their story

 

Technological Capability
Objective: Level 1:6d describe and discuss how they feel about what they have accomplished
Learning Experiences:
1. provide opportunities
for children to try out basic sewing techniques and joining of materials
2. draw a plan of what the puppet is going to look like and notate how it will be fastened together
3. select appropriate materials for puppet
4. create, test and modify puppet
5. in class presentation identify how they feel about what they have made. Talk about the process and what modifications they had to make

 

Technology and Society
Objective: Level 1:7 share their reasons for their choice of technological activity
Learning Experiences:
1. talk to
parents or older siblings and ask them if they have ever had any puppets, did they have a favourite puppet show, did they ever make any and for what purpose
2. talk about Punch and Judy and how it was part of English life
3. talk about famous puppets from the past and identify why they appealed to the audience (Basil Brush etc)
