Technology Units
Junior and Senior

Topic: Making Simple Machines Contexts: School and Recreational Areas: Materials, Structures & Mechanisms
Year 1-6 Level One and Two
Situation: New Entrant classrooms need more equipment for children at the start of the year
Design Brief: design an apparatus that can move around the room
Specifications: - must have wheels
- must be able to move
- consider the size of the apparatus and the road map it has to go on
- shoe box dimensions
Technological Knowledge and Understanding
Objective: Level 1.2a ask questions, share ideas about modifications in familiar technologies such as toy cars
Level 2.2a identify and discuss ideas about modifications and adaptations in familiar technologies
Learning Experiences:

1. observe and record how children play with toys
2. investigate how toy cars and trucks are put together
3. research the type of maths materials that is already available
4. identify and explore the principles of wheels
5. identify significant factors
6. experiment with different types of wheels

Technological Capability
Objective: Level 1:6a share ideas about possible solutions and strategies, and choose a practicable option
Level 2:6a discuss possible solutions and strategies, and select and develop a suitable option
Learning Experiences:

1. select best materials for design
2. identify best design for children to use
3. plan, produce and test a mockup of design

Technology and Society
Objective: Level 1:8 share ideas about the ways in which familiar technologies affect their lives
Objective: Level 2:8 explore and compare the roles of some example of technology in daily life in their own and in other time and place
Learning Experiences:

1. research the development of the wheel from early times. Make time line
2. compare the difference of wheels in time i.e. Penny Farthing wheels as compared to Mountain Bike wheels
3. consider the impact of the wheel on society in past, present and future. Chart the differences

Assessment
Objective L:2:8 explore and compare the roles of some example of technology in daily life in their own and in other time and place Assessment Task:
consider the impact of the wheel on society in past, present and future
Achieving at Level 3
describe and identify the positive and negative effects of some instances of technologies on people's lives and the environment
Achieving at Level 2
