Learning Intentions/Outcomes: students will be able to distinguish the differences between a hybrid car and petrol car and how they impact on our environment. Students will be able to make informed decisions and plan a design for their own hybrid car

Situation/Setting the Scene:

Cars are known to contribute to Global Warming by emitting green house gas

Design Brief:

Design a prototype of a car that teachers could use to get to school that would be friendly to our environment

Specifications:

·         Has to be presented to the class

·         Can be designed as a group

·         Uses less petrol or a friendly substitute

Technological Knowledge

Technological modelling

Understand that different forms of functional modelling are used to inform decision making in the development of technological possibilities and that prototypes can be used to evaluate the fitness of technological outcomes for further development

Learning Experiences: (examine, identify, discuss, collect, observe, compare, read, describe)

·         Discuss what Green house emissions are, identify what causes it, answer the questions on Greenhouse Gases Inspiration activity

·         Investigate what is available already in hybrid cars, make notes and diagrams http://www.sierraclub.org/globalwarming/cleancars/hybrids/  http://www.eartheasy.com/live_hybrid_cars.htm   http://www.care2.com/channels/ecoinfo/hybrid

bullet Play Digistore interactive  game and create a hybrid car Hatchback, luxury car, sports car
bullet Complete the Alternative fuel Inspiration activity, identify what are alternative fuel options and identify the different car types

·         Draw a diagram of a type of hybrid car and label all the parts that make it hybrid with explanations use these sites for research http://auto.howstuffworks.com/hybrid-car.htm

Technological Practice

Assess

Brief development

Describe the nature of an intended outcome, explaining how it addresses the need/opportunity. Describe the key attributes that enable development and evaluation of an outcome

Learning Experiences:(generate, select, develop, adapt, present, test & evaluate, draw, model, plan)

bullet Investigate materials and decide what sort of car you could design for your teacher that would help to slow green house emissions
bullet draw a prototype plan of what the car could look like, put together a proposal for the creation of it and present it to your teacher
bullet describe your intended outcome, explain how it addresses a need, describe the key attributes of your car and what the final outcome would present

Nature of Technology

Characteristics of technology

Understand how society impacts on and is influenced by technology in historical and contemporary contexts and that technological knowledge is validated by successful function

Learning Experiences: (impacts, cultural values, attitudes, behaviour, preferences, beliefs &
values)

·          present to your family the benefits of owning a hybrid car and ask them would they consider it for their
next car, why or why not

·          do a class poll on the results from the previous activity, evaluate your findings in a class discussion
