Topic: Christmas Contexts: Personal, School, Environmental Areas: ICT, materials, structures & mechanisms
Year 6 - 8 Level Three
Situation: Students have been studying in their Social Studies Classes the implications of recycling. Christmas is coming closer and the students in your class would like to make gifts for their family. They want to be able to use recyclable materials
Design Brief: design a gift for your family using recyclable materials. For your Social Studies class present your findings in a display using appropriate information and communication tools. This display will clearly show the technologies that have been used to reshape recyclable materials
Specifications: include in your display
- technologies you have used to reshape the recyclable materials
- evidence of your investigations
- evidence of planning (product, resource and action plant) you may use
aluminium (tins, cans, foil), lids, bottles, wood off-cuts, plastics of sorts, PVC off-cuts
Technological Knowledge and Understanding
Objective: Level 3:2b explore and describe how components are linked in a technological system
Learning Experiences:

1. investigate the manufacturing of materials such as pewter
2. analyse quality control systems in a factory
3. identify different materials used for making gifts
4. evaluate the market opportunities
5. investigate home cottage industry
6. establish common understanding of safety, and production processes
7. develop skills for the production of gifts in a variety of ways

Technological Capability
Objective: Level 3:6b prepare a plan of action, identify and collect the required resources, and produce the selected solution to meet agreed or specified criteria
Learning Experiences:

1. develop a plan displaying all equipment and materials to be used
2. design a gift
3. produce an advertisement advertising the merits of your gift

Technology and Society
Objective: Level 3:7 identify and consider different views and feelings of people in relation to some specific technological developments or effects
Learning Experiences:

1. exploring gifts and materials from other cultural groups and their impact on the market
2. research traditional methods of gift making in Maori society
3. research the relationships between the systems for gathering and making gifts and the customs, beliefs, and values of different societies and cultures
