Topic: Carrying money to school Contexts: School, Personal Areas: Materials, ICT
Year 3-4 Level Two
Situation: Children are bringing their lunch money to school in their school bag or in their pockets. Some children have lost all or some of their money because of this
Design Brief: design something that will enable children to carry their money safely
Specifications: - use materials provided
- must be secure
- must be no bigger than a pencil case
- must have evidence of your research
Technological Knowledge and Understanding
Objective: Level 2:2a identify and discuss ideas about modifications and adaptations in familiar technologies such as bags, purses, wallets
Learning Experiences:

1. examine and investigate different methods of holding money, make a chart that identifies which are well designed/if there is room for improvement
2. make a survey asking children what sort of things they would like to see in a money carrying vessel
3. look and experiment with different methods of joining the materials available to you i.e. sewing, hot glue gun, stapling

Technological Capability
Objective: Level 2:6b identify and gather necessary resources, and model or make their preferred solution 
Learning Experiences:

1. decide on item to be made and draw up a plan with materials to be used and any special features to be included
2. make a mock-up using paper and card
3. test and evaluate your design using 3 different methods
4. make a presentation advertising your design remembering to include all the key resources

Technology and Society
Objective: Level 2:8 explore and compare the roles of some example of technology in daily life in their own and in another place such as banks etc
Learning Experiences:

1. investigate how people store their money safely
2. invite or interview somebody from your local bank to talk about how money can be kept safely
3. using all information resources available to you find out how people used to carry money in the early 1800s, compare their attitudes to present day attitudes

Assessment
Objective L.2:2a identify and discuss ideas about modifications and adaptations in familiar technologies such as bags, purses, wallets etc Assessment Task:
examine and investigate different methods of holding money, make a chart that identifies which are well designed and if there is any room for improvement. Must be able to identify specific modifications
Achieving at Level 3
compare significant features of some technologies e.g. user friendliness, practicality
Achieving at Level 2
identify and discuss ideas about modifications and adaptations in familiar technologies such as bags, purses
Achieving at Level 1
ask questions and share ideas about modifications in familiar technologies such as bags and purses
